1Step 1: Count your staff per site

The 50-employee threshold applies per site, not per company.

• List every site of the business (building or unit).
• Count the employees at each site separately.

  Calculate how many people you need to train

• Note which sites have up to 50 employees and which have more than 50.

2Step 2: Check which obligation applies at each site

Article 39 of Law 5239/2025 requires employees to be trained in CPR and the Heimlich manoeuvre, in force since 1 January 2026.

• Up to 50 employees: training through the educational videos and material of the Ministry of Labour.
• More than 50 employees: at least 50% trained through certified first aid bodies, every 3 years.
• Work out the 50% rounding up. For example, 75 employees means 38 people.

Tip: aim for 60 to 70% of staff, so absences and people leaving do not take you below the threshold.

Non-compliance leads to administrative sanctions from the Labour Inspectorate and civil liability for the employer if an incident occurs.

3Step 3: Check who is already trained

• Collect the CPR and Heimlich certificates your staff already hold.
• Check that they come from a certified first aid body. A simple attendance note is not a certification.
• Check that they are still valid. At sites with more than 50 employees, training is repeated every 3 years.

4Step 4: Choose a certified first aid body

• Ask the provider to document that it is a certified first aid body.
• The training covers CPR and the Heimlich manoeuvre, with hands-on practice on a manikin.
• Every trainee receives a certificate and the provider issues an attestation for the file.
• The training can take place at your premises.

5Step 5: Schedule the training

• Decide which employees will be trained at each site.
• Split them into groups and check that your space fits them.
• Schedule the groups around your shifts.
• Ask for a written quote with price and dates.

6Step 6: Complete the training

• Every trainee practises CPR and the Heimlich manoeuvre hands-on.
• Record who attended each group and when.
• Check that the percentage is covered at every site.

7Step 7: Put the compliance file together

The file for the safety officer contains:

• Named list of trained employees
• Copies of the ERC certificates
• Attestation from the training body
• Retraining date

8Step 8: Schedule retraining

• Note the expiry date of the certificates. The ERC certificate is valid for 3 years.
• Schedule retraining before 3 years have passed.
• Recount the staff at each site when it changes, so the percentage is maintained.
