How to Use an AED: Step by Step | PulseGuard
What Is an AED?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that analyzes heart rhythm and, if needed, delivers an electrical shock to restore normal heart rhythm. Using an AED within the first 3-5 minutes increases survival chances by 70%.
Step 1: Recognize the Situation
If someone collapses and isn't breathing normally:
- Call 112 immediately
- Ask someone to bring the AED
- Start CPR immediately
Step 2: Turn On the AED
Open the device. It will automatically begin giving voice instructions. Follow them exactly.
Step 3: Place the Electrode Pads
Expose the victim's chest and attach the pads as shown in the diagrams on them:
- One below the right collarbone
- One on the side, below the left armpit
Step 4: Rhythm Analysis
The AED will automatically analyze the heart rhythm. Do not touch the patient during analysis.
Step 5: Shock or Continue CPR
If the AED advises a shock, press the flashing button, after making sure no one is touching the patient. If no shock is advised, continue CPR immediately.
Can Anyone Use an AED?
Yes! AEDs are designed for use by anyone. However, training makes use faster and more effective. Pulse Guard offers AED training at your location.
